Open World Action Adventure Level

December 10, 2021

Louisiana State University

This is a LSU Digital Media Arts & Engineering (DMAE) master degree student's submission for their final project in an introductory class to Unreal Engine. The first 11 weeks of the class is learning how to bring in models, gray block, add complex animation sequences to a skeletal mesh, light and some basic straight forward logic using blueprints. The final 4 weeks is dedicated to a final project.

This student took the entire four weeks to craft a level for an Open World Action Adventure game. It is great to see that a single person can be an excellent level designer, lighter, and interactive designer. There were definitely some breathtaking moments going from above ground to an underground layer that I was not anticipating.

From the soundscape to the clever design elements (shrinking player, flying on a bird) – it is amazing how much can be done when a student has a mastery of the tools and an intuitive sense of what makes a great level.
